Essex born comedian Ian Irving is very proud to follow in the footsteps of a long line of top celebrities that have held the coveted position of 'Variety Club Great Britain Captain'. Past Captains include; Sir Trevor Brooking, Sir Bobby Charlton, Sir Henry Cooper, Sir Geoff Hurst, Sir Harry Secombe, Russ Abbot, Jasper Carrott, Frank Carson, John Conteh, Ronnie Corbett, Bruce Forsyth, Jimmy Hill, Pat Jennings, Robert Powell, Mike Reed, Jimmy Tarbuck, Dennis Waterman, plus many other household names.

Sport is a major part of lan's life. His hobbies include Golf, Skiing, Football, Karate and Cricket. One of his many sporting achievements includes winning The Jimmy Tarbuck Golf Classic in Portugal, and The Russ Abbot Golf Classic, both major trophies in entertainment circles. Ian is one of the most popular and sought after entertainers on the 'After Dinner Speaking' circuit and golf is his speciality subject, as he plays in many corporate events during the year.

He has performed for many regional golf associations including; BB&O, Essex Captains, Essex County Golf Union, Middlesex County Golf Union, and Surrey Golf Captains to name but a few. Recently Ian was the preferred choice to perform for the Variety Club Golf Classic in Mauritius, the Variety Club Sunshine Classic at Wentworth and the Robert Sangster Celebrity Golf Classic held in Barbados. He was also chosen to perform at the PGA Annual Lunch with Seve Ballesteros.

Ian also acts as compere and auctioneer at many events ensuring the evenings go with a swing to help raise imuch needed money - whatever the cause. Ian is deeply honoured to be the Variety Club Captain for 2010. A committed Variety supporter over many years, he is really looking forward to his year as Captain. The Golf Society was formed in 1965 for the purpose of raising funds for the purchase of'Sunshine Coaches' for handicapped children.
